History & Area Attractions
A Rich Native American History
The community of Council Hill is named for a Muskogee landmark 5 miles west of town, where smoke signals from the top of the Hill called leaders from surrounding Muskogee communities for meetings of the Creek Council. In 1840 with the construction of the Council House, Council Hill was named the first Muskogee capital. Later, it served as the headquarters of the Creek Regiment of the Confederate Army during the civil war, and was a largely rural farming area until the addition of the Missouri, Oklahoma and Gulf Railroad.
